CHAPTER SEVEN

CASSIEL

The moment I saw Adriel step out of the apartment building, she became the only thing in the world. I couldn't see, or hear, or even think about anything else. I always knew she'd look good in human clothes, and I was right. She was even more stunning than I remembered. Every look alike I'd ever taken to my bed paled in comparison.

I knew she had to be wearing some permanent wound from the fall, but whatever it was she showed no immediate evidence of it. I was glad for that. My own wound was one not to be seen by the eyes. Nothing but a few ribs which had not healed back into their proper position. They rarely caused me any discomfort. I knew I was fortunate for that, fortunate not be terribly scared or to carry a limp. And I was so very happy to see the same for Adriel. Probably a little too happy, since I was supposed to be devising a means by which to capture her for Lucifer.

Vanth jabbed her elbow into my side. "Are you paying attention to me?"

I frowned, rubbing the sore spot. "Not in the least. Did you say something?"

"The boy." She lifted her chin to indicate the human into whose car Adriel was climbing. "Is he a lumin?"

I shifted my sight, losing the rest of the world to darkness in order to check the boy for a glow. Seconds ticked by. Too many seconds. I heard the car engine rev to life and could almost picture it pulling from the parking lot into the street. Only when it was less than ten feet from our hiding place could I see the dimmest light around the boy.

"Yes. Makes sense she'd want to keep one handy. But I wonder how she convinced him to go along with her." The world came back into focus slowly, leaving a blur at the edges of my vision far longer than it should have. Apparently several decades of disuse had left my angelic senses somewhat lessened. Something I had no intention of telling Vanth.

Vanth shrugged. "Who cares? He won't be a problem. I can't kill him with my push, but there are a lot of ways to take a human's life. Even one with angel blood in his veins."

"Right." I stood, stretching the pins and needles from my calves. "We should follow them. See where they're going." I said the words with reluctance, mostly because I wasn't eager to get back on Vanth's bike.

"I have a better idea," she said. "Why not set up a trap for them? I can sniff out which apartment an angel has been in recently. This is the perfect time. Get this over with quick. Then we can both go back to our own lives."

She had a good point. The less time I had to spend in her company, the better. Besides, actually seeing Adriel had shaken me far deeper than I thought it would. I didn't need a lot of time for my heart to start talking my head into doing something stupid.
